Meet Jack the Bike Man in West Palm Beach

with No Comments

There’s a kindness that has been spreading throughout inner-city West Palm Beach for over 15 years, and it all started with a guy named Jack and a bike.

Jack Hairston, better known as Jack the Bike Man, is the founder and still bike-repairing head of the West Palm Beach based children’s bicycle charity that bears his name. Despite disabilities that make it difficult for him to walk, Jack helped a passerby in 1999 repair the brakes on his bicycle after he crashed into a curb to slow down. Somehow, word spread through the migrant community that this guy Jack is happy to fix your bicycle.

Today, he and his volunteers refurbish and donate as many as 5,000 bicycles a year! The bikes are fixed, cleaned up, and donated by the non-profit charity to inner-city children and impoverished adults who have no other means of transportation. Most of the bikes received by the organization are donated by police stations, including the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, and other municipal authorities, and private donors.

Anyone can donate a bike to Jack the Bike Man by visiting his warehouse in Grandview Heights on Florida Ave in West Palm Beach. And don’t worry about not being able to find the place – you can’t miss the massive bike painting by popular muralist Eduardo Medieta (EM)!

You can also call Jack at 561-832-0072. He is at his warehouse on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
